Finding a Mark 2 Vauxhall Astra on the roads today is becoming a real challenge. If you do manage to spot one there’s probably a lot greater a chance of it being the appreciating GTE hot hatch than a lesser model such as this one.
This 1987 three-door car is of Merit trim level and is powered by a 1.3-litre OHC engine which made a claimed 75hp when new. The flat beige paint and faded bumpers distract from what is a really original car that still wears its dealer plates and pie dish hubcaps.
Rust gripped these cars as much as 30 years ago, so it’s surprising to see one that looks relatively rot-free – especially at those distinctive rear arches.
At one point the Mark 2 Astra and its Belmont sibling were the most stolen cars in the UK. This owner is taking no chances and secures E963 JOU with a steering wheel lock to this day.
